Can anyone point me in the direction of eight string C6 (ACEGACEG) tabs or workbook? I would think this is probably the most common eight string tuning but there seems to be so little material on the net.

Thank you.

I agree on the Cindy Cashdollar DVD's
They are great to get you started and keep you busy for some time.
But as Johan Jansen stated somewhere else on this forum,
nothing beats a real life teacher in front of you.
A DVD doesn't correct your faults and misinterpretations...

Serge

I am more interested in tabs of songs than teaching material but thanks anyway guys.

I have to say that teaching material from the big names of any instrument often leave a lot to be desired. No one in their right mind would question their playing ability but their ability to teach can be questionable. (Professionally I was a lecturer/teacher in adult education).

Hi Ray,

Quote:
I would think this is probably the most common eight string tuning (eight string C6 (ACEGACEG))

Maybe, but that's not positive, the C6th with the 'E' top note is and has been the standard C6th. The version with the high 'G' is primarily for country and came later in the tuning development timeline.
The McAuliffe E13th and the Hawaiian E13th, the B11th, C13th and C6/A7 are all contenders, a good resource for tuning information is http://www.well.com/~wellvis/tuning.html , but be aware that a lot of the information about deceased players' tunings is 'second hand' and liable to be at the best a "guesstimate". The most accurate way of determining a players tuning is probably your own ears..
As for instructional material, I concur. Some of the "Pro's" who've compiled courses are dire players anyway.
The availability of Tab is somewhat problematical and sparodic to say the least, probably the best source is Scotty's Music.

Hi Basil,

All I have is the masters for the Jerry Byrd single solos and have to make copies as I get orders. That takes quite awhile for me to do that. At this particular time I am only making about 10 or more copies at a time. Look at the list and let me know which ones you want. They are $4.00 each and $6.00 each for the diatonic solos. I will not know the exact shipping until the package is taken to the post office and weighed. Paper is heavy so I can’t even estimate the charge until I know how many solos you want.

Get to me when you have the time.

Scotty

Many thanks Basil for that comprehensive list and information

Are you suggesting that those C-6 tabs mentioned in Scotty's list are likely to be eight string with the 1st string being an E rather than ACEGACEG?

One of the most confusing aspects of learning lap steel is that there is no standard tuning. I would think from an educational point of view that until one has mastered, or at least come to some understanding of one tuning then one should not move to a second, third etc. but it is difficult to find material in order to go down that path.

Well Brother Ray,

That's exactly why I quickly shifted to pedal steel :)
Looks more complicated at first with all those pedals and levers.
But as soon as I noticed all those different tunings on the regular steel, the decision was made quick.
There was no way I was going to retune my guitar for every song
and my wife surely wasn't going to let me buy a guitar for every tuning :D
But hey, that's MY way of thinking and I just loooooove the sound of the pedal steel...

And regarding Basil's "suggestions"...
The man is an ace, if he would be "wrong", I don't know who would be right...
After all, he is now "officially" a FAMOUS steel guitar player :-)
and not only for his playing and contributions to the music business.
For what I understand, the biggest part of his induction is thanks to his efforts
for the steel guitar community and the fact he taught half of Britain's contemporary steel players.
So, is Basil right? Off course he is :-)

Serge

I hasten to say that in no way was I being questioning Basil's knowledge and abilities and I sincerely apologise if that is the way it was read. My question was genuine. Perhaps I should have said 'What form of the C-6 tuning is that likely to be in that list of C-6 tabs?'.

I would like to be able to work towards playing standards rather than just Hawaiian or C&W music and from what I have managed to gather a number players do use a C-6 tuning on six stringed lap steels so rightly or wrongly I thought that it would also be C-6 on an eight string. What is recommended?

Incidentally is there a musical reason for using the ACEGACEG for Country and the high E C-6 for Hawaiian?

Hi Ray, question away, I thrive on the challenge of having to cross-check my input/sources/reconsiderations and spelling etc.

NOW to the crux of my reply, the C6th tuning in all of the Jerry Byrd tab is listed in the post I made, scroll down to "119, 120 LESSON NINE C6th tuning (1-8) E. C .A. G. E. C. Bb. C"
All around that section of the JB Book is info re all the tunings used in the course AND the tab..
As for a "Standardised" C6th, there are the PSG ones with either the 'G' on top or the 'E' and a 'D' re-entrant string included and a low 'F' on the bottom (This tuning is actually Fmaj9 added sixth), for the lap/console steel the one with the 'E' on top is the original and with a seventh (Bb) low down (Actually making it C13th) and is the STANDARDISED Hawaiian version, the standard Western Swing/Country version is with the 'G' on top.

As for the E13th in the tab listed the tuning IS LISTED as E-B-D-E=G#-B-C#-E (Low to high, as is the original way of referencing tunings) The Country players us a Variant with a G# on top, Known colloquially as the "Don Helms" E13th. B-D-F#=G#-B-C#-E-G#.
NONE of which is 'Gospel' as there are many versions of "who said what and to whom?", if you get my gist.

Thanks for the recognition Sjers, and whilst I can say that many have learned from me, it's more from watching me perform rather than direct tuition, especially whilst I was in Ireland.
Maurice Hipkiss (a Fiddle Player doubling on steel here in the UK,) used to come regularly to our gig at the Castaways in Birmingham and just sit all night watching and listening.
